'Book smarts' don't prepare you for everyday living within your local environment. How to act or assimilate into unfamiliar surroundings or how to understand and negotiate with those around you. Street smarts prepare you for the dangers that lurk that maybe 'common sense' doesn't always prepare you with. Unless you utilize book smarts daily I believe street smarts to be inherently more useful.

This is coming from a person with book smarts. I wish I had street smarts. While being knowledgeable about important things is great, you survive because you know how to out of street smarts. Reading about building a fire or hunting won't actually get you anywhere.

"There is no doubt in my mind street smarts kicks book smarts ass. To be street smart means you have situational awareness. You can assess the environment you are in, who is in it, and what the available angles are. Being on the street, or in the trenches, or whatever low to the ground metaphor you prefer, requires you learn to trust your own judgment about people and what matters. This skill, regardless of where you develop it, is of great value everywhere in life regardless of how far from the streets you are. "

Booo smarts is being knowledgeable, and street smarts is being able to read people and the situation their in. Street smarts will get you a lot farther in life, you can manipulate people to get farther and you know how to take control of a situation, this applies in day to day life when your working too, a better relationship between you and your co-workers could get you that promotion a lot easier.
