The expected return of the 1 billion dollar option is equal to 50% x $1,000,000,000 + 50% x $0 = $500,000,000. The expected return of the 1 million dollar option is 100% x $1,000,000 = $1,000,000. A person who understands economics and/or finance would obviously choose the 1 billion dollar option because it has a higher payout (expected return) but most people (even with knowledge of econ/fina) are risk averse and would choose the 1 million dollar option.

You can still comfortably live, job-free, on $1,000,000 for at least 50 years if you limit yourself to $20,000 a year. Budget yourselves and don't spent it all at once...

Minnesota guest forgets its all or nothing. If your smart I mil will take you a long way. If you end up with the other 50% you get nothing making the 500mil expected return meaningless.
