The expected return of the 1 billion dollar option is equal to 50% x $1,000,000,000 + 50% x $0 = $500,000,000. The expected return of the 1 million dollar option is 100% x $1,000,000 = $1,000,000. A person who understands economics and/or finance would obviously choose the 1 billion dollar option because it has a higher payout (expected return) but most people (even with knowledge of econ/fina) are risk averse and would choose the 1 million dollar option.

go for the 50% on a billion. With a decent salary youll earn a million in like 10 years. if u get a bilion and live for 80 years, you get to spend over 12 million a year. 81 percent r idiots

I've been in situations like this far too often. They've been 50/50 odds each time. from the point I started keeping tally, I have a general 10% chance of getting it right. Screw 50%. 50% sucks.

It's basically a win-win if you pick the second one. Either you can live your life normally, or you can go all out on the world. If you just got a million dollars, it's not enough to splurge every day and it's too much to cover.

1 billion is just too big to pass up a 50% chance of getting it. 1 million isn't that hard to make, but a billion is a whole new level.

I could realistically possibly get millions of dollars in my life time. The chances of getting a billion dollars are so slim as to be negligible. 50/50 odds for a billion is too amazing, getting a million dollars is not even a once in a life-time event if you work hard enough and choose the right career path.

With 1 billion you could make a difference in the world. With 0 or 1 million you could be average middle class.

The chances of having nothing are 50/50. If we got to do this a hundred times obviously it would be more worthwhile to choose the second option, but as this is only once most would choose to avoid the risk.
