Kaphokis says BUDDHISM: A religion of Indian origin that is today most common in Japan, South Korea, China, and Southeast Asia. This nontheistic belief does not worship any gods, but they follow the teachings of their holy figure Buddha, the enlightened one, who spread his philosophy some time around the fifth century BC. They believe in a constant chain of reincarnation, that those who die instantly are reborn as another person, animal, or spirit. The goal of Buddhism is to break from this cycle and achieve oneness with the universe. To do this, Buddhists follow the Noble Eightfold Path, which contains life guidelines such as seeking wisdom, harming nobody, and meditating regularly. Buddha also taught the Middle Way - basically, moderation in all things and never going too extreme. By following these teachings, Buddhists believe they can reach Nirvana, the "truest" form of existence, with eternal life and no suffering at all. SUNNI ISLAM: The majority of all Muslims. They believe that the Caliph, or political and religious leader, should be elected by the people as it says in the Quran, in contrast to the more monarchial Shias. Sunnis, who make up about 87% of Muslims, agree with the Shia minority on the basic tenets of Islam: that Allah is the only God, that Muhammad is His messenger, that the Quran is His teachings, and that the "Five Pillars of Faith" must be observed: Shahada (a declaration of faith), Salat (the five daily prayers while facing Mecca), Zakat (charity to the poor), Sawm (fasting during the month of Ramadan), and Hajj (the pilgrimage to Mecca). Sunnis value the actual teachings and instructions of the Quran more than Shias. While groups such as ISIS and al-Qaeda are Sunni, they practice Wahhabism, a very radical, puritanical sect of Sunni Islam. Sunnis make up the majority in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates.
