Doesn't matter how many bans are placed on assault weapons. Drugs are illegal, people still do them. Rape is illegal, people still do it. Underage drinking is illegal, teenagers still drink. No matter how illegal assault weapons are, people will get their hands on them, and the people who respect the law won't buy weapons, and therefore wouldn't be able to defend themselves against a lawbreaker.

Murder is illegal, yet people still do it. At a certain point that argument looses all value

Yes, but you can protect yourself with a normal, manual gun (i.e. pistol)

Criminals can illegally get it, then you wouldn't have a gun to protect yourself, therefore you are fu*king screwed....

you don't need an assault rifle to do that

You do if the people trying to kill you have them. If I dont "need" an semi auto rifle to practice my Second Amendment rights, then you don't "need" the internet to practice your First Amendment rights. Neither were invented when the Consitution was written. Saying I don't "need" to have more than 10 rounds is like saying you don't "need" to email more than 10 people. Anyway, it's not a question of need. Its a question of blaming the large problem of violent crime on a small minority. Of all the murders in the US each year, these so called "assault weapons" are involved in much much less than 1% of them. All an assault weapons ban will do is curtail the rights law abiding citizens without putting the slightest dent in the problem.

We should focus on helping the mentally unstable who choose to shoot people, instead of banning weapons that they will illegally obtain anyway.

Why does the state need an assault rifle? Because the state is always trustworthy? Because the state is always ethical? Because the state has NEVER killed or imprisoned any of its own citizens without justification and due process?

if a guy wants to kill someone, he can do it just as easily with any other gun so why is the assault rife any different

They're the same as hunting rifles. They just look different. They are used in less that 1% of all murders. Banning them would not put a dent in violent crime. The AR15 is the most popular rifle made today. There are so many of them that even with a ban, it would not be hard for a criminal to get one if he wanted one. Most criminals use cheap handguns and fire 10 rounds or less. An assault weapons ban would do nothing t change that.Weapons like AR15s and AK47s are expensive. People normally do not commit crimes with expensive guns. They commit crimes with cheap guns. Criminals do not want to invest much in a weapon they they will likely have to throw away in a storm drain or have confiscated by the police. Owners of ARs and AKs on the other are willing to pay more. They are prized possessions like an antique car. They don't want to do anything that will risk the police taking them away.

Rifles of any kind are used in only 2% of murders. Bare hands and feet are used in twice as many murders as rifles according to the FBI. The media covers mass shootings ad nauseam. This attention and fame not only gives unstable people a motive to kill, but makes people think they are more common they really are. In reality multiple homicides of 3 or more people make up less than one percent of all murders in the US. That number includes gangland killings and domestic murder/suicides in addition to mass shootings.
