You meet someone who has never seen a computer before. How would you explain to them what it is and what it does? (By elisae FemaleGold MedalGold TrophySuper Star 1 year ago)

I'd tell them, "It's many books without pages."

I would just say "you can see porn on this thing. But you gotta figure it out yourself." And then watch them helplessly fumble about with the keys until the computer explodes :)

The computer's memory is like a sheet of graph paper with millions of squares; in each square, it stores a meaningful integer number. The computer is instructed to perform arithmetic operations over those numbers, and according to the result of each operation, it decides to perform other operations. Each program is a set of instructions that tells the computer what to do; it's like a cook book, but written using only numbers in the memory, in a way that the computer can understand it. Everything inside the computer is expressed as a number; each letter in a text file, each key you press in the keyboard, the positions and colors of each element in the screen, the data that it sends and receives over the network. And it's all arranged in a manner that a human being can understand it. It's a very beautiful machine.

Its a machine with multiple functions, you can for example listen to music, learn new knowledge, watch movies and shows, not to mention you can also make money off of it if you know what youre doing, you can also play games and look at cool art or read books/comics(including manga), but the options are pretty limited if it isnt connected to the internet and you shouldnt overuse it, if you do overuse it, it can make the computer slower, make you sick and/or give you a seizure(which is really really trippy). There are also smartphones/tablets which are basically a portable and more limited version. great question btw.
